The Diesel Oxidation Catalyst is located in front of the DPF in the aftertreatment system. Mainly, it oxidizes hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust and increases the exhaust temperature sufficiently to start passive DPF regeneration. If a DOC goes bad, the whole process gets interrupted, and as a result, there will be regen failures, higher soot levels, and fault codes. Doc and DPF cleaning or replacement should always be considered together when diagnosing regen issues.
